Escarcega

Escarcega (or Escárcega in the Spanish Language) is a small city in the Campeche state of Mexico. Escarcega is located at 18.62°N 90.74°W. The population of the city in 2003 was about 26,800 people.

Escarcega is a the junction of Mexican highways 251 and 186, and is a new city which grew in the 20th century. It is named after Mexican patriot Francisco Escarcega.

Escarcega is also the name of a department within the state of Campeche, including the city of Escarcega and the surrounding region. In 1999 the population of the Department of Escarcega was 55,802 people.
