Escambia County, Alabama

Escambia County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is said to be from the name of a river in an American Indian language (but see Escambia County, Florida for another possible origin). As of 2000 the population was 38,440. Its county seat is Brewton.

History Escambia County was established on December 10, 1868.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,468 km² (953 mi²). 2,454 km² (947 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.58% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 38,440 people, 14,297 households, and 10,093 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (41/mi²). There are 16,544 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.40% White, 30.79% African American, 3.01% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,297 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.70% are married couples living together, 15.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.40% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 102.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,319, and the median income for a family is $36,086. Males have a median income of $30,632 versus $18,091 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,396. 20.90% of the population and 15.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.70% are under the age of 18 and 17.80% are 65 or older.
