Emporia is a city located in Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,665. It is the county seat of Greensville County6.

Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.1 km² (7.0 mi²). 17.8 km² (6.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,665 people, 2,226 households, and 1,406 families residing in the city. The population density is 317.5/km² (821.9/mi²). There are 2,412 housing units at an average density of 135.2/km² (349.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 42.45% White, 56.15% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,226 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.5% are married couples living together, 21.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,333, and the median income for a family is $35,743. Males have a median income of $27,772 versus $21,657 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,377. 16.0% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.5% are under the age of 18 and 14.5% are 65 or older.
