Elizabethtown, Illinois

Elizabethtown is a village located in Hardin County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 348. It is the county seat of Hardin County6.

Geography Elizabethtown is located at 37°26'57" North, 88°18'13" West (37.449136, -88.303748)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 348 people, 183 households, and 99 families residing in the village. The population density is 191.9/km² (495.6/mi²). There are 226 housing units at an average density of 124.7/km² (321.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.99% White, 1.44% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 0.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 183 households out of which 18.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.9% are non-families. 44.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 27.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.90 and the average family size is 2.63.

In the village the population is spread out with 17.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 15.5% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 29.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 51 years. For every 100 females there are 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $17,750, and the median income for a family is $38,750. Males have a median income of $30,625 versus $16,563 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,567. 22.5% of the population and 16.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 40.0% are under the age of 18 and 17.1% are 65 or older.
