Elizabethton, Tennessee

Elizabethton is a city located in Carter County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,372. It is the county seat of Carter County6.

Geography Elizabethton is located at 36°20'11" North, 82°14'21" West (36.336527, -82.239038)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.3 km² (9.4 mi²). 23.7 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.35% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,372 people, 5,454 households, and 3,512 families residing in the city. The population density is 563.6/km² (1,459.3/mi²). There are 5,964 housing units at an average density of 251.4/km² (650.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.30% White, 2.47% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 1.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,454 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 82.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,909, and the median income for a family is $33,333. Males have a median income of $26,890 versus $20,190 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,578. 19.4% of the population and 15.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.8% are under the age of 18 and 16.1% are 65 or older.
