Elision

It's the rule which makes a letter disappear and be replaced by the character ' (apostrophe) to an easier pronunciation.

Example:

For a masculine word, the article normally preceding is 'le' but if the word begins by a vowel, the 'e' of the article disappears like in this French sentence:

L'avion décolle.
