Electron tunnel microscopy

Both the tunnelling microscope and the force microscope operate on different principles to other instruments in that they do not use focused beams of particles. Instead they use atomic sized probes which pass over the object being scanned and record the changes in size of the sample at a level close to the dimensions of a single atom.
