Elba, Alabama

Elba is a city located in Coffee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 4,185. The city is the county seat of Coffee County.

Geography Elba is located at 31°25'2" North, 86°4'39" West (31.417263, -86.077442)1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.0 km² (15.5 mi²). 39.8 km² (15.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,185 people, 1,593 households, and 1,099 families residing in the city. The population density is 105.1/km² (272.3/mi²). There are 1,873 housing units at an average density of 47.1/km² (121.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 63.92% White, 34.29% African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,593 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 18.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,021, and the median income for a family is $29,563. Males have a median income of $25,756 versus $21,052 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,382. 30.5% of the population and 25.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 45.7% are under the age of 18 and 18.5% are 65 or older.
