Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,312 km² (507 mi²). 1,300 km² (502 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 24,595 people, 8,270 households, and 6,210 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 9,223 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 56.77% White, 41.51% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 2.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,270 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 15.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.90% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.12.
In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 112.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,146, and the median income for a family is $41,810. Males have a median income of $32,748 versus $23,331 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,415. 15.50% of the population and 13.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.60% are under the age of 18 and 18.40% are 65 or older.
