Eaton County, Michigan

Eaton County is a county located in the U.S. State of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 103,655. Its county seat is Charlotte6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,500 km² (579 mi²). 1,493 km² (576 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.45% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 103,655 people, 40,167 households, and 28,237 families residing in the county. The population density is 69/km² (180/mi²). There are 42,118 housing units at an average density of 28/km² (73/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.25% White, 5.29% African American, 0.44% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 3.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 40,167 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.30% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 9.10% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $49,588, and the median income for a family is $57,898. Males have a median income of $41,978 versus $29,638 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,411. 5.80% of the population and 4.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.80% are under the age of 18 and 5.90% are 65 or older.
