Easton's Bible Dictionary (1897)

Redirected from Easton's Bible Dictionary

Easton's Bible Dictionary generally refers to the Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Third Edition, by Matthew George Easton M.A., D.D. (1823-1894), published three years after Easton's death in 1897 by Thomas Nelson. Because of its age, it is now a public domain resource.

Easton was a Scottish Presbyterian about whom little is written on the Web. Perhaps the Wikipedia could be the first place to provide an online biography for him?

Easton's Bible Dictionary contains an extensive set of entries used in the Bible, albeit from a 19th century Christian viewpoint. Some of the entries in it are now out-of-date, many are only short dictionary entries, (note that Wikipedia is not a dictionary) but much remains that is useful source material.

A number of articles in the Wikipedia already include content from Easton's Bible Dictionary: a number of others are now being slowly and carefully added to Wikipedia, for revision up to modern standards. These articles mostly deal with obscure people and places in the Bible.

The following header should be added to all Easton's entries, and only removed when they have been thoroughly brought up-to-date, and the fact noted in the article:

This is an article from the public domain Easton's Bible Dictionary, originally published in 1897. This article is written from a nineteenth century Christian viewpoint, and may not reflect modern opinions or recent discoveries in Biblical scholarship. Please help the Wikipedia by bringing this article up to date.
