According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.6 km² (3.3 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.04% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,784 people, 1,667 households, and 990 families residing in the town. The population density is 483.8/km² (1,253.0/mi²). There are 1,709 housing units at an average density of 218.5/km² (565.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.30% White, 1.00% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.06% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 1.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,667 households out of which 28.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.86.
