East Carroll Parish, Louisiana

East Carroll Parish is a parish located in the U.S. State of Louisiana. As of 2000, the population is 9,421.

Geography The parish has a total area of 1,146 km2 (442 mi2). 1,092 km2 (421 mi2) of it is land and 54 km2 (21 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 4.75% water.

Demographics As of 2000, there are 9,421 people, 2,969 households, and 2,140 families residing in the parish. The population density is 9/km2 (22/mi2). There are 3,303 housing units at an average density of 3 persons/km2 (8 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 31.60% White, 67.29% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,969 households out of which 36.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.00% are married couples living together, 27.70% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 27.90% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.40.

In the parish the population is spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 11.50% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 18.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 104.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.90 males.

The median income for a household in the parish is $20,723, and the median income for a family is $24,554. Males have a median income of $22,099 versus $18,672 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $9,629. 40.50% of the population and 32.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 56.80% are under the age of 18 and 32.70% are 65 or older.
