Geography The parish has a total area of 1,219 km2 (471 mi2). 1,180 km2 (455 mi2) of it is land and 39 km2 (15 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 3.21% water.
Demographics As of 2000, there are 412,852 people, 156,365 households, and 102,575 families residing in the parish. The population density is 350/km2 (906/mi2). There are 169,073 housing units at an average density of 143 persons/km2 (371 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 56.17% White, 40.09% African American, 0.21% Native American, 2.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 1.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 156,365 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.70% are married couples living together, 16.80% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 34.40% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.14.
In the parish the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 14.40% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 91.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.50 males.
The median income for a household in the parish is $37,224, and the median income for a family is $47,480. Males have a median income of $38,334 versus $25,073 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $19,790. 17.90% of the population and 13.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.70% are under the age of 18 and 11.50% are 65 or older.
