Duplin County, North Carolina

Duplin County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 49,063. Its county seat is Kenansville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,121 km² (819 mi²). 2,118 km² (818 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 49,063 people, 18,267 households, and 13,060 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (60/mi²). There are 20,520 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 58.67% White, 28.94% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 10.87% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 15.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 18,267 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% are married couples living together, 14.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.50% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,890, and the median income for a family is $34,760. Males have a median income of $26,212 versus $20,063 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,499. 19.40% of the population and 15.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.50% are under the age of 18 and 22.70% are 65 or older.
