Dubuque County is a county located in the U.S. State of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 89,143. Its county seat is Dubuque, Iowa6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,597 km² (617 mi²). 1,575 km² (608 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.36% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 89,143 people, 33,690 households, and 23,111 families residing in the county. The population density is 57/km² (147/mi²). There are 35,505 housing units at an average density of 23/km² (58/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.07% White, 0.86% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 33,690 households out of which 33.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.40% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,582, and the median income for a family is $48,742. Males have a median income of $31,977 versus $22,309 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,600. 7.80% of the population and 4.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.80% are under the age of 18 and 11.00% are 65 or older.
