Dubois County, Indiana

Dubois County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 39,674. The county's county seat is Jasper, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,127 km² (435 mi²). 1,114 km² (430 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.18% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 39,674 people, 14,813 households, and 10,739 families residing in the county. The population density is 36/km² (92/mi²). There are 15,511 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (36/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.54% White, 0.14% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.51% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 2.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,813 households out of which 37.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.80% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $44,169, and the median income for a family is $52,342. Males have a median income of $32,484 versus $23,526 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,225. 5.30% of the population and 2.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.30% are under the age of 18 and 7.30% are 65 or older.
