Dougherty County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 96,065. The county's county seat is Albany, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 867 km² (335 mi²). 854 km² (330 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.51% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 96,065 people, 35,552 households, and 24,282 families residing in the county. The population density is 113/km² (292/mi²). There are 39,656 housing units at an average density of 46/km² (120/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 37.80% White, 60.13% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 35,552 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.90% are married couples living together, 23.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.70% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.70% under the age of 18, 12.20% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 20.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 87.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,934, and the median income for a family is $36,655. Males have a median income of $30,742 versus $22,254 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,645. 24.80% of the population and 19.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 35.30% are under the age of 18 and 17.20% are 65 or older.
