Digital image processing

Digital Image Processing refers to the study of algorithms applied to digital images. The field of pattern recognition is tied with this field when the patterns to be identified are in images.

A subfield of digital image processing is binary image processing. Some algorithms applied in this field are classified as morphological image processing

A related field is computer vision, in which more abstract information is extracted from images. An example computer vision problem is acquiring a 3D of an environment from video footage of it. As part of such an algorithm, image processing techniques such as smoothing and edge detection[?] might be performed.

Some applications are:

  • Satellite image processing
  • Medical image processing[?]
  • Face detection, feature detection, face identification
  • Microscope image processing
