Diamondhead, Mississippi

Diamondhead is a town located in Hancock County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,912.

Geography Diamondhead is located at 30°23'0" North, 89°22'22" West (30.383444, -89.372660)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 30.3 km² (11.7 mi²). 29.4 km² (11.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.16% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,912 people, 2,559 households, and 1,916 families residing in the town. The population density is 201.3/km² (521.5/mi²). There are 3,084 housing units at an average density of 105.0/km² (272.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.35% White, 1.78% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 2.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,559 households out of which 23.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.8% are married couples living together, 5.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 21.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.64.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 3.2% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 29.8% from 45 to 64, and 24.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $51,361, and the median income for a family is $58,533. Males have a median income of $41,725 versus $29,595 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,631. 7.2% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.7% are under the age of 18 and 2.7% are 65 or older.
