Department of Internal Affairs

Department of Internal Affairs: New Zealand's oldest government department. Formed in 1840 as the Colonial Secretary's Office and gained present name in 1907.

Presently, major services include:

  • Birth, death and marriage registration and name changes
  • Gaming enforcement and lottery grants
  • Censorship enforcement
  • Citizenship grants and passport issue
