Denver County, Colorado

Denver County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 554,636. The county seat is Denver.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 401 km² (155 mi²). 397 km² (153 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.03% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 554,636 people, 239,235 households, and 119,378 families residing in the county. The population density is 1,396/km² (3,617/mi²). There are 251,435 housing units at an average density of 633/km² (1,640/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.30% White, 11.12% African American, 1.31% Native American, 2.81% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 15.59% from other races, and 3.75% from two or more races. 31.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 239,235 households out of which 23.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.70% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.10% are non-families. 39.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.00% under the age of 18, 10.70% from 18 to 24, 36.10% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,500, and the median income for a family is $48,195. Males have a median income of $34,232 versus $30,768 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,101. 14.30% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.30% are under the age of 18 and 9.70% are 65 or older.
