Defense Superior Service Medal

The Defense Superior Service Medal (DSSM) of the United States is awarded to members of the armed forces who rendered "superior meritorious service in a position of significant responsibility" [1] (https://www-perscom.army.mil/tagd/tioh/Awards/Defense%20Superior%20Service%20Medal.htm) after 6 February 1976. It is "specifically intended to recognize exceptionally superior service, and to honor an individual's accomplishments over a sustained period."

The DSSM takes precedence after the Silver Star, and before the Legion of Merit.
