Decatur County, Tennessee

Decatur County is a county located in the U.S. State of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 11,731. Its county seat is Decaturville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 893 km² (345 mi²). 865 km² (334 mi²) of it is land and 29 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.19% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 11,731 people, 4,908 households, and 3,415 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (35/mi²). There are 6,448 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.12% White, 3.47% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,908 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.70% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 26.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,741, and the median income for a family is $34,919. Males have a median income of $25,945 versus $20,155 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,285. 16.00% of the population and 13.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.90% are under the age of 18 and 22.20% are 65 or older.
