Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 20,559 people, 7,724 households, and 5,020 families residing in the city. The population density is 748.2/km² (1,938.4/mi²). There are 7,993 housing units at an average density of 290.9/km² (753.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.71% White, 0.54% African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,724 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 27.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
