Dayton is a city located in Liberty County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,709.

Geography Dayton is located at 30°3'23" North, 94°53'44" West (30.056383, -94.895500)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.6 km² (11.0 mi²). 28.6 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 5,709 people, 2,129 households, and 1,517 families residing in the city. The population density is 199.7/km² (517.1/mi²). There are 2,371 housing units at an average density of 82.9/km² (214.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.08% White, 19.69% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 6.67% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 10.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,129 households out of which 37.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% are married couples living together, 16.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,401, and the median income for a family is $47,250. Males have a median income of $39,075 versus $21,068 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,139. 21.3% of the population and 16.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 33.6% are under the age of 18 and 15.8% are 65 or older.
