Davison County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 18,741. Its county seat is Mitchell6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,131 km² (437 mi²). 1,128 km² (435 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,741 people, 7,585 households, and 4,770 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (43/mi²). There are 8,093 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.23% White, 0.27% African American, 1.98% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,585 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.40% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.10% are non-families. 30.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 12.00% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.80 males.
