Daviess County, Kentucky

Daviess County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 91,545. Its county seat is Owensboro, Kentucky6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,234 km² (476 mi²). 1,198 km² (462 mi²) of it is land and 36 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.91% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 91,545 people, 36,033 households, and 24,826 families residing in the county. The population density is 76/km² (198/mi²). There are 38,432 housing units at an average density of 32/km² (83/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.69% White, 4.35% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 36,033 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.60% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,813, and the median income for a family is $45,404. Males have a median income of $35,295 versus $21,971 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,739. 12.30% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.60% are under the age of 18 and 11.40% are 65 or older.
