Daviess County, Indiana

Daviess County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 29,820. The county's county seat is Washington, Indiana6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,131 km² (437 mi²). 1,115 km² (431 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.42% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 29,820 people, 10,894 households, and 7,821 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (69/mi²). There are 11,898 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.52% White, 0.45% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.99% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 2.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,894 households out of which 35.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.80% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.00% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,064, and the median income for a family is $41,818. Males have a median income of $30,706 versus $20,102 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,015. 13.80% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.70% are under the age of 18 and 12.00% are 65 or older.
