Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,468 km² (567 mi²). 1,430 km² (552 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.58% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 147,246 people, 58,156 households, and 42,512 families residing in the county. The population density is 103/km² (267/mi²). There are 62,432 housing units at an average density of 44/km² (113/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.05% White, 9.14% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 3.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 58,156 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.90% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,640, and the median income for a family is $46,241. Males have a median income of $31,287 versus $23,622 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,703. 10.10% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.30% are under the age of 18 and 12.10% are 65 or older.
