Darss

The Darß is a peninsula at the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. It is situated within the territory of the district of Nordvorpommern. Between the peninsula and the mainland there is a very shallow lagoon, which is a part of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park, just as the entire peninsula itself. The peninsula is about 45 km long. Its full name is Fischland-Darß-Zingst, for these are originally the names of three regions making up the peninsula. In recent times the name "Darß" applies also to the entire peninsula. In former times there was no common name for the peninsula, because the parts were not connected until the storm tide of 1872.

The Darß is famous for being a resting place for tens of thousands of migrating cranes and geese. Tourism is increasing since the German reunification, but the Darß is still far from becoming a crowded tourist resort.
