Dallas County is a county located in the U.S. State of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 2,218,899. Its county seat is Dallas6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,353 km² (909 mi²). 2,278 km² (880 mi²) of it is land and 75 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.19% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 2,218,899 people, 807,621 households, and 533,837 families residing in the county. The population density is 974/km² (2,523/mi²). There are 854,119 housing units at an average density of 375/km² (971/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 58.35% White, 20.31% African American, 0.56% Native American, 3.98% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 14.04% from other races, and 2.70% from two or more races. 29.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 807,621 households out of which 35.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.90% are married couples living together, 14.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.90% are non-families. 27.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.34.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 10.70% from 18 to 24, 34.40% from 25 to 44, 18.90% from 45 to 64, and 8.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $43,324, and the median income for a family is $49,062. Males have a median income of $34,988 versus $29,539 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,603. 13.40% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.00% are under the age of 18 and 10.50% are 65 or older.
