Dallas is a town located in Gaston County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,402.

Geography Dallas is located at 35°18'53" North, 81°10'31" West (35.314816, -81.175215)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 3,402 people, 1,324 households, and 879 families residing in the town. The population density is 759.3/km² (1,966.7/mi²). There are 1,440 housing units at an average density of 321.4/km² (832.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 76.34% White, 22.49% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 2.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,324 households out of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% are married couples living together, 17.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $29,075, and the median income for a family is $32,073. Males have a median income of $29,643 versus $20,810 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,819. 19.2% of the population and 14.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.8% are under the age of 18 and 18.4% are 65 or older.
