Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Cuyahoga County is a county located in the U.S. State of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 1,393,978. Its county seat is Cleveland6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,226 km² (1,246 mi²). 1,187 km² (458 mi²) of it is land and 2,038 km² (787 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 63.19% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,393,978 people, 571,457 households, and 354,874 families residing in the county. The population density is 1,174/km² (3,040/mi²). There are 616,903 housing units at an average density of 520/km² (1,346/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 67.35% White, 27.45% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.50% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 3.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 571,457 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.40% are married couples living together, 15.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.90% are non-families. 32.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 89.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,168, and the median income for a family is $49,559. Males have a median income of $39,603 versus $28,395 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,272. 13.10% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.40% are under the age of 18 and 9.30% are 65 or older.
