Cumberland County, North Carolina

Cumberland County is a county located in the U.S. State of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 302,963. Its county seat is Fayetteville6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,705 km² (658 mi²). 1,691 km² (653 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.87% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 302,963 people, 107,358 households, and 77,619 families residing in the county. The population density is 179/km² (464/mi²). There are 118,425 housing units at an average density of 70/km² (181/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.15% White, 34.90% African American, 1.55% Native American, 1.88% Asian, 0.30% Pacific Islander, 3.13% from other races, and 3.09% from two or more races. 6.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 107,358 households out of which 39.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.90% are married couples living together, 15.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 13.70% from 18 to 24, 32.90% from 25 to 44, 17.80% from 45 to 64, and 7.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 102.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,466, and the median income for a family is $41,459. Males have a median income of $28,308 versus $22,379 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,376. 12.80% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 16.80% are under the age of 18 and 13.70% are 65 or older.
