Crisp County, Georgia

Crisp County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 21,996. The county's county seat is Cordele, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 728 km² (281 mi²). 709 km² (274 mi²) of it is land and 19 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.62% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 21,996 people, 8,337 households, and 5,869 families residing in the county. The population density is 31/km² (80/mi²). There are 9,559 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 54.07% White, 43.40% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,337 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.80% are married couples living together, 21.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.00% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,547, and the median income for a family is $32,747. Males have a median income of $28,595 versus $19,393 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,695. 29.30% of the population and 24.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 41.80% are under the age of 18 and 24.00% are 65 or older.
