Criccieth Castle

Criccieth Castle is situated in Criccieth, North Wales, overlooking Tremadog Bay. It was begun in the early 13th century by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, and the work was continued by his grandson Llywelyn ap Gryffydd. Criccieth was captured by Edward I during his second campaign in North Wales (1282-83). Edward further fortified the castle, adding another tower to the wall of the inner ward and strengthening the Engine Tower, which served as a foundation for a siege engine. In 1404 Owain Glyn Dwr captured the castle, tearing down the walls and burning it.

Its most notable feature is a twin-towered gatehouse, rare among Welsh-built castles.
