Crenshaw County, Alabama

Crenshaw County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of a judge, Anderson Crenshaw. As of 2000 the population was 13,665. Its county seat is Luverne.

History Crenshaw County was established on November 30, 1866.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,582 km² (611 mi²). 1,579 km² (610 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 13,665 people, 5,577 households, and 3,892 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (22/mi²). There are 6,644 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.82% White, 24.79% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,577 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.70% are married couples living together, 15.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.20% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,054, and the median income for a family is $31,724. Males have a median income of $27,286 versus $17,703 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,565. 22.10% of the population and 18.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.30% are under the age of 18 and 23.50% are 65 or older.
