Covington, Tennessee

Covington is a city located in Tipton County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,463. It is the county seat of Tipton County6.

Geography Covington is located at 35°33'54" North, 89°38'50" West (35.564937, -89.647168)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.7 km² (10.3 mi²). 26.7 km² (10.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.10% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 8,463 people, 3,199 households, and 2,136 families residing in the city. The population density is 317.5/km² (822.1/mi²). There are 3,372 housing units at an average density of 126.5/km² (327.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 51.59% White, 46.54% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,199 households out of which 34.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.9% are married couples living together, 25.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 79.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,684, and the median income for a family is $32,213. Males have a median income of $28,964 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,293. 27.9% of the population and 25.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 37.9% are under the age of 18 and 34.1% are 65 or older.
