Cottondale is a town located in Jackson County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 869.

Geography Cottondale is located at 30°47'49" North, 85°22'34" West (30.796810, -85.376031)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.65% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 869 people, 376 households, and 239 families residing in the town. The population density is 220.7/km² (573.2/mi²). There are 445 housing units at an average density of 113.0/km² (293.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 76.41% White, 18.64% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.58% from other races, and 3.45% from two or more races. 4.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 376 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% are married couples living together, 19.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% are non-families. 34.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $20,509, and the median income for a family is $26,667. Males have a median income of $24,545 versus $18,571 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,266. 27.4% of the population and 24.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 34.3% are under the age of 18 and 23.6% are 65 or older.
