Geography Cortez is located at 27°27'49" North, 82°40'21" West (27.463550, -82.672610)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.3 km² (5.1 mi²). 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 7.6 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 57.20% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,491 people, 2,373 households, and 1,468 families residing in the town. The population density is 791.8/km² (2,047.7/mi²). There are 3,308 housing units at an average density of 583.2/km² (1,508.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.33% White, 0.16% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,373 households out of which 9.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.1% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.89 and the average family size is 2.29.
