Coquille, Oregon

Coquille is a city that is the county seat of Coos County, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,184. The primary economic base is the Timber industry. The city derives its name from the Coquille Indian tribe.

Geography Coquille is located at 43°10'46" North, 124°11'15" West (43.179528, -124.187582)1. Coquille is bordered by the Coquille River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.1 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.37% is water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 4,184 people, 1,686 households, and 1,129 families residing in the city. The population density is 593.9/km² (1,538.3/mi²). There are 1,850 housing units at an average density of 262.6/km² (680.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.64% White, 0.50% African American, 1.77% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 1.60% from other races, and 2.99% from two or more races. 4.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,686 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,931, and the median income for a family is $35,144. Males have a median income of $34,583 versus $21,567 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,619. 10.6% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.3% are under the age of 18 and 6.1% are 65 or older.
