Conway County, Arkansas

Conway County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 20,336. The county seat is Morrilton.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,468 km² (567 mi²). 1,440 km² (556 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.85% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 20,336 people, 7,967 households, and 5,736 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 9,028 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.27% White, 13.05% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,967 households out of which 31.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.70% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,209, and the median income for a family is $38,179. Males have a median income of $28,199 versus $20,134 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,056. 16.10% of the population and 12.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 21.90% are under the age of 18 and 13.10% are 65 or older.
