Converse County is a county located in the State of Wyoming. As of 2000, the population is 12,052. Its county seat is Douglas6.

History Converse County was organized in 1888.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 11,047 km² (4,265 mi²). 11,020 km² (4,255 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

Demographics As of the census1 of 2000, there are 12,052 people, 4,694 households, and 3,407 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 5,669 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.72% White, 0.15% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.46% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 5.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,694 households out of which 36.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.60% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.50% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,603, and the median income for a family is $45,905. Males have a median income of $36,443 versus $19,032 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,744. 11.60% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.70% are under the age of 18 and 9.70% are 65 or older.
