Conservation easement

A legal agreement which creates a private nature preserve or in some other way places a restriction upon the use of land which advances conservation goals. For example, a conservation easement with a rancher might require a land owner with a stream flowing through his property to restrict the grazing of cattle in the riparian lands near the stream. In this particular instance, the agreement might provide for the construction of facilities to water the cattle away from the stream.
