Colusa County, California

Colusa County is a county located in California's Central Valley, northwest of Sacramento. As of 2000, the population was 18,804. The county seat is Colusa.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,995 km² (1,156 mi²). 2,980 km² (1,151 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.48% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 18,804 people, 6,097 households, and 4,578 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (16/mi²). There are 6,774 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.29% White, 0.55% African American, 2.33% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.39% Pacific Islander, 26.68% from other races, and 4.54% from two or more races. 46.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,097 households out of which 41.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 9.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.90% are non-families. 21.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.01 and the average family size is 3.51.

In the county the population is spread out with 31.60% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 19.80% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 103.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,062, and the median income for a family is $40,138. Males have a median income of $32,210 versus $21,521 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,730. 16.10% of the population and 13.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.50% are under the age of 18 and 8.20% are 65 or older.
