Colquitt County is a county located in the U.S. State of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 42,053. The county's county seat is Moultrie, Georgia6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,441 km² (557 mi²). 1,430 km² (552 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.77% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 42,053 people, 15,495 households, and 11,063 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (76/mi²). There are 17,554 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 67.78% White, 23.47% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 7.05% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 10.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,495 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.00% are married couples living together, 15.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,539, and the median income for a family is $34,792. Males have a median income of $26,588 versus $20,155 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,457. 19.80% of the population and 16.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.70% are under the age of 18 and 19.60% are 65 or older.
