Colleton County, South Carolina

Colleton County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 38,264. Its county seat is Walterboro6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,935 km² (1,133 mi²). 2,736 km² (1,056 mi²) of it is land and 199 km² (77 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.78% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 38,264 people, 14,470 households, and 10,490 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 18,129 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.52% White, 42.18% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,470 households out of which 33.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.10% are married couples living together, 16.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,733, and the median income for a family is $34,169. Males have a median income of $28,518 versus $19,228 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,831. 21.10% of the population and 17.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.70% are under the age of 18 and 19.10% are 65 or older.
