Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Coeur d'Alene, which means "heart of eagle" in French, is a city located in Kootenai County, Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 34,514. The city is the county seat of Kootenai County6.

Geography Coeur d'Alene is located at 47°41'34" North, 116°46'48" West (47.692845, -116.779910)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.2 km² (13.6 mi²). 34.0 km² (13.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.46% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 34,514 people, 13,985 households, and 8,852 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,014.9/km² (2,628.9/mi²). There are 14,929 housing units at an average density of 439.0/km² (1,137.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.80% White, 0.22% African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 2.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,985 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,001, and the median income for a family is $39,491. Males have a median income of $31,915 versus $21,092 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,454. 12.8% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.5% are under the age of 18 and 8.1% are 65 or older.
