Coahoma County, Mississippi

Coahoma County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 30,622. Its county seat is Clarksdale6.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,510 km² (583 mi²). 1,435 km² (554 mi²) of it is land and 75 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.97% water.

Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 30,622 people, 10,553 households, and 7,482 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 11,490 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 29.28% White, 69.21% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,553 households out of which 36.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.20% are married couples living together, 28.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the county the population is spread out with 33.00% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 19.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 84.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $22,338, and the median income for a family is $26,640. Males have a median income of $26,841 versus $19,611 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,558. 35.90% of the population and 29.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 45.90% are under the age of 18 and 31.50% are 65 or older.
